Assignment 3:
Portable Studio Portrait
This was my portion of the in class demo. I had Cristin use all of her newspapers and her AP stylebook to make it look like she’s a professional journalist. She works at CM Life so I wanted to show all of the newsprints she has been in, and the tools she uses at work.
I enjoyed playing around with different poses and seeing how the lights affect the subject and the background. My favorite shot of mine is the medium shot because it looks like a genuine candid smile, and it doesn’t feel too forced. One thing I wish I fixed was the wrinkles in the background. The backdrop did not fit in the hallway so we were limited when it came to how big the backdrop could expand.
The first photo is my wide angle shot. I made it look like she was reading the paper, and I had all her other equipment spread around her to add to the set up.
The second photo is my medium shot. I like how candid Cristin’s facial expression is. The other people behind the scenes made Cristin laugh and I knew it would be the perfect time to snap a photo so I could get her real smile.
The third photo is my close up shot. I did a couple different takes of this, but I really liked this one because even though Cristin is cross eyed, it really makes it look like she is engaged with what she is reading on the newspaper.

This section are the photos I took outside of class. I worked with Cristin on these photos and we helped each other with setting up, posing, and making sure all the lights were behaving. I really liked doing the outside of class assignment because I felt like I had more creative freedom over what I was taking photos of. I feel like my studio skills have grown since the beginning of the year and the more studio shoots I do, the more I feel confident with them.
This first photoshoot with Lu went smoothly after me and Cristin figured out how to set everything up correctly. I liked using different props to help enhance Lu’s outfit. I think that having the plane white backdrop draws attention to the detail of the clothing. They enjoy dressing up in different costumes, so I made them look like a librarian from a different time period.
The second photoshoot is with Kayla Winn, who is an actress who plays Janet in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I wanted to capture her character, so I had her wear the actual costumes she wears during the show. Me and Cristin used gels during this photoshoot, and I think that really elevated the whole feel of the shoot.
